Introduction. The name of each listed species is followed by up to five sources that report the species as occurring in Michigan. Sources in all upper-case letters refer to specific insect collections: MSU-ARC refers to material held by the Michigan State University Arthropod Research Collection (data provided by G. Parsons). All others refer to collection data extracted from the Symbiota Collections of Arthropods Network (SCAN) database online at https://scan-bugs.org/. See the Methods page for a list of abbreviations and associated collections.
Species names preceded by a single '?' are considered probable (for occurring in Michigan) but uncertain records. Those preceded by '??' are considered possible but unlikely to occur in Michigan. Species that are fully accepted as having valid Michigan records are unmarked. Species reported in the literature that we consider to be erroneous Michigan records are in a separate list following the others.
LAEMOPHLOEIDAE
7 genera, 15 species
Charaphloeus, an unnamed species nr. adustus; Schwarz (1876), Hubbard and Schwarz (1878), MSU-ARC; see BugGuide for more about this unnamed species which was previously included within C. adustus (LeConte)
Charaphloeus convexulus (LeConte, 1879): Thomas (1993), Evans (2014) Hubbard and Schwarz (1878), Downie and Arnett (1996), MSU-ARC
Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens, 1831): Ruppel (1977), MSU-ARC
??Cryptolestes punctatus (LeConte, 1854): Townsend (1889) as Laemophlaeus punctatus Lec.; MI seems a bit north of its expected range
Cryptolestes pusillus (Schönherr, 1817): Ruppel (1977), Townsend (1889), MSU-ARC
Cryptolestes turcicus (Grouvelle, 1876): SI:NMNH , MSU-ARC; described by Casey (1884) as Laemophloeus truncatus (which has since been synonymized with C. turcicus) from a MI specimen collected by Schwarz
Laemophloeus biguttatus (Say, 1825): Andrews (1923), Hubbard and Schwarz (1878), Downie and Arnett (1996), MSU-ARC
Laemophloeus fasciatus Melsheimer, 1844: Thomas (2015), Hubbard and Schwarz (1878), Downie and Arnett (1996), MSU-ARC
Laemophloeus fervidus Casey, 1916: Haack and Ruesink (2020), MSU-ARC
Lathropus striatus Casey, 1916: Casey (1916), Leng (1920), Downie and Arnett (1996), SI:NMNH; described by Casey from a single specimen coll. by Schwarz in Detroit
Lathropus vernalis Casey, 1884: Thomas (2010), Hubbard and Schwarz (1878), Downie and Arnett (1996)
Leptophloeus angustulus (LeConte, 1866): Majka and Chandler (2009)
?Narthecius grandiceps LeConte, 1863: Hubbard and Schwarz (1878), Leng (1920); a rare mostly southeastern sp., MI record needs confirmation
??Placonotus modestus (Say, 1827): Townsend (1889), EMEC:EMEC as Laemophlaeus modestus Say; MI is a little north of its known range
Placonotus zimmermanni (LeConte, 1854): Thomas (1984), Downie and Arnett (1996), MSU-ARC
The following species was also reported from Michigan, but we consider it to be adventive, a misidentification or other error:
Placonotus testaceus (Fabricius, 1787): Hubbard and Schwarz (1878) as Laemophloeus testaceus Fab.; an Old World sp. that does not occur in NA per Thomas (1984), prob. had P. zimmermanni
