Beetles of Michigan
William G. Ruesink, Gary L. Parsons, and Robert A. Haack
Various lists of Michigan beetles (Coleoptera) have been published since the late 1800s. The first, and until now, only attempt to compile a state-wide list of Michigan beetles was published by Hubbard and Schwarz in 1878, over 140 years ago! At that time, they listed well over 2000 species, of which 2066 are considered valid by today’s standards. In this online paper, we have greatly expanded that initial list and as of August 22, 2021, we recognize 3761 valid beetle species from Michigan with 919 more that we are trying to verify. In addition, we have found 320 beetle species reported for Michigan that we consider erroneous.
For each species, we present its current accepted scientific name as well as selected references and various collection records. See Methods for details. We have also noted species that have been reported in the literature as occurring in Michigan but for which we consider erroneous.
